Building Community Day, 2026

Each year, the employees at Harvest Table get together for a day and branch out to help our community in meaningful way. Last month we visited Happy Hills, one of the oldest African American neighborhoods in Winston-Salem, and helped them plant a new community garden. This historic landmark is making strides to preserve history, as well as update their amenities in order to better care for their community, so we wanted to help them do just that.⁣

Along with other volunteers from Wake Forest and the Graylyn Estate, Deacon Dining employees rolled up their sleeves and got to work building benches, planters, and garden beds. In just one afternoon, volunteers were able to plant ten raised garden beds, assemble two benches, two additional raised beds, two compost bins, and begin the building of a storage shed. Soon this garden will overflow with tomatoes, peppers, okra, herbs, corn, beans, squash, berries, and so much more.

After an afternoon hard at work, we were able to serve an outdoor picnic dinner to members of the community, where we shared connection and made memories. ⁣The entire neighborhood was invited to join us and enjoy the newly transformed space. Our catering team hosted a platter of refreshing sandwiches and salads, a welcomed meal after a day in the sun.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help support and uplift our community, we couldn’t have done it without your help.⁣
