Giving Back to the Community for the Holidays
Deacon Dining and Campus Kitchen Partner for Community Service Event
On Monday, December 9th, 2024, Deacon Dining teamed up with Campus Kitchen to give back to the local community. This heartwarming initiative aimed to provide essential items, dry groceries, and freshly prepared meals to families in need.
The day began with staff members packing hundreds of reusable tote bags filled with basic necessities and dry foods. The essential items included towels, paper towels, toilet paper, disinfecting wipes, soap dishes, shower rings, shower curtains, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dish sponges, cleaner, and dish towels. Grocery bags were stocked with pasta, pasta sauce, grains, snacks, Oreos, and tuna, all generously donated to ensure families had what they needed.
Once the bags were packed, the team loaded them onto a truck and set off for ‘Salem Gardens,’ an apartment community near Winston-Salem State University and Salem Lake. Upon arrival, Deacon Dining’s staff, along with staff from Under the Oaks Catering, worked diligently to serve a warm meal to families. The Catering Department prepared a delicious spread of green beans, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, gravy, bread rolls, and apple pies.
Families were able to pick up both a bag of essential items and dry groceries, as well as to-go plates of fresh, home-cooked food. It was a day of giving and unity, as our campus community came together to help our neighbors in need.
We would like to extend our deepest thanks to all those who participated in this event. Your generosity makes a difference, and together we are building a stronger, more compassionate community.
