Wake Forest University Chef Jonathan Burns Honored with “Champion of Change” Award

Winston-Salem, NC – Jonathan Burns, the esteemed Director of Culinary Development at Wake Forest University, was named this year’s recipient of the prestigious “Champion of Change” Award by the Wake Forest Office of Sustainability. This annual accolade recognized individuals who demonstrated an exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship.

Chef Burns earned this honor through his unwavering dedication to sustainability, consistently sourcing at least 30% of the kitchen’s ingredients from third-party verified sustainable providers. His efforts significantly contributed to the university’s sustainability goals and set a high standard for environmentally conscious practices in campus dining.

In addition to his sourcing practices, Burns was nominated for his meticulous work in auditing ingredients and creating verification systems to ensure compliance with third-party sustainability standards, such as those set by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). His initiatives increased accountability within the Wake Forest University Deacon Dining team and the broader Harvest Table team, while also strengthening partnerships with smallholders and local farms.

Chef Burns expressed his commitment to sustainability, stating, “We are leading the charge for proven climate change in collegiate dining!”

The award ceremony was a highlight of Wake Forest’s annual Earth Month celebrations, a time dedicated to honoring the Deacs who lead the sustainability transformation at the university. This year’s event featured Provost Michele Gillespie and EVP/CFO Jackie Travisano as co-presenters of the awards. They announced the winners and celebrated their contributions to sustainability.

Following the awards program, a light reception was held, providing an opportunity for attendees to congratulate the honorees and discuss their achievements.

The “Champion of Change” Award, specifically the service and social action category, underscored the importance of community involvement and proactive efforts in fostering a sustainable future. Chef Burns’ recognition was a testament to his impactful work and the positive change he continues to inspire within the Wake Forest community.
