Creating a Sustainable Homecoming Weekend
Celebrating Homecoming with a Commitment to Sustainability
As fellow Deacs, we live and breathe our values of making the world a better place for all its inhabitants. Without Pro Humanitate, there’s no humanitate! This spirit was alive and well during Wake Forest University’s Homecoming weekend, celebrated from September 13th to 15th, 2024.
This year, Harvest Table was able to host a variety of meals, class reunions, and a large outdoor party. Together with the assistance of the Office of Sustainability, we set out with the goal of creating a zero-landfill event. This ambitious effort ensured that nearly everything used—from food to event materials—was either reused, recycled, or composted.
Sustainability team members were on hand to assist guests in properly sorting waste, while numerous waste stations equipped with recycling and compost bins were placed throughout the event. Less visible but equally impactful methods of sustainability included a dance floor constructed from recycled materials, reusable centerpieces, and water bottle refill stations provided by the Office of Alumni, and a complimentary shuttle service to reduce transportation-related emissions from the Office of Transportation.
At Harvest Table, we not only focus on the quality of the food we serve but also on the impact our events have on the environment. We are grateful to everyone who joined us in celebrating Homecoming while helping to protect the planet.
Thank you for being a part of this special event. Go Deacs!
