Deacon Dining Hosts Ultimate Tailgate Takeover in the Pit Ahead of Spring Showcase

Wake Forest students got a taste of game day magic a little early this week when Deacon Dining teamed up with Wake Forest Athletics and Wake Forest Football to transform the Pit into a full-blown football tailgate celebration.

In a surprise takeover, guests were greeted with an epic lineup of tailgate-themed eats and fanfare that captured the spirit of fall Saturdays—right in the heart of the dining hall. A festive tent popped up serving freshly popped popcorn, a loaded chicken wing bar complete with a bubbling buffalo sauce fountain, and sweet dessert nachos that had students lining up for seconds.

The Grill station took things to the next level with indulgent Double Down Donut Burgers made with Brasstown Beef and topped with fried pickles—served on none other than Krispy Kreme donuts, a sweet treat native to Winston-Salem. Over at the International Grill station, the special Pit Beef Sandwich with hand-carved roast beef was a hit, while the Southern Kitchen offered a stacked Nacho Bar. A Kona Ice truck dished out icy treats, and the bakery served up football-themed cupcakes and nitrogen-frozen strawberry ice cream sandwiches nestled between fresh oatmeal raisin cookies.

But it wasn’t just about the food. Athletics brought the hype with a raffle table offering Wake Forest swag, and as diners enjoyed their plates, the Demon Deacon Marching Band and cheerleaders made a surprise appearance, filling the space with energy. The Demon Deacon himself rolled in on his iconic motorcycle—and even new Head Football Coach Jake Dickert joined the action, jumping behind the line to sling wings alongside the dining team.

The event was a spirited kickoff for this weekend’s Spring Showcase, happening Saturday, April 19. Students are invited to keep the energy going at the Screamin’ Demons Tailgate outside Gate 5 starting at 1:30 p.m., with free food and fanfare before the team takes the field at 3:00 p.m. for a practice/scrimmage format event. Fans will also get the chance to compete alongside players for exclusive giveaways.
