Pitsgiving Keeps Giving!
Have you ever wondered what happens to all the leftover food from our annual Pitsgiving celebration? It doesn’t go to waste—it gets reused!
Each year, our Sustainability Coordinator Quin leads an initiative called “Pitsgiving Keeps Giving,” held a few days after the main event. The goal? To make sure every bite counts. Leftover food from Pitsgiving is creatively repurposed during this follow-up event, and whatever remains afterward is donated to Campus Kitchen, helping feed our community instead of ending up in the trash.
This year, Quin and her sustainability intern Charlie encouraged guests to share their most creative ideas for reusing leftovers. The responses were inspiring—think eggrolls, sandwiches, quesadillas, pot pie, potato pancakes, stuffing bowls, and even freezing leftovers for later!
Why does this matter? Quin reminds us that reducing food waste is one of the top solutions to climate change. In fact, an estimated 305 million pounds of food are wasted from Thanksgiving dinners each year. That’s a staggering amount of resources lost.
Want to help make a difference? Here are Quin’s top tips for reducing food waste:
- Plan your meals carefully—think about leftovers before you start cooking.
- Let guests choose their leftovers so they’re more likely to take and enjoy them.
- Bring containers—or have extras on hand—to make packing up easy.
Together, we can make sure Pitsgiving keeps giving, long after the plates are cleared.
